Welcome Comm199

My name is Amanda Suggs, and I am 21 years old from Danville California.  I am a current student at San Jose State University, and about to begin my senior year at San Jose State. I am excited for what is to come after graduation this coming May 2012, in hopes to follow my dream in the broadcasting field. When I was a senior in high school and I was trying to figure out my career path and what college would be the best fit for me, I remember watching E!News everyday at four o’clock once I got home from school. I sat in my family room with my mom and I said, “ Mom, I think I want to be a news anchor.” From then on I wanted to choose a major I knew suited me and my personality as well as the career I was considering in broadcasting. Communication was a great fit for me because it is useful in everyday life and there is unlimited opportunities with a Communications degree.

Three years and 8 communications courses later, I can see how much I have grown as a person with every Communications course I have taken at SJSU. I have learned how to communicate with friends, coworkers, family, and my boyfriend in a more mature and understanding manner, which has been a key to having successful relationships with these people in my life.  I have learned the importance of communication and it is not only about learning how to express yourself in an appropriate way but how to listen and understand others opinions and feelings. Majoring in Communications has made me a better and more outgoing person. I am not afraid to stick up for myself, or ask for help from strangers, or talk to my friends about issues I may come across. This will make me a more successful person in all that I try and accomplish in my future. I recently interned at NBC Universal and it was an amazing experience! I want to continue my journey in the television field and gain as much information possible through communicating with people and networking as much as possible. This summer, I applied to multiple internships in order to continue to pursue a future in broadcasting, and I landed an internship in San Francisco at KNBR radio station as a social networking coordinator. My job is to operate four radio station’s Twitter and Facebook account. Because of the exceptional Communications skills I have gained at SJSU, I was able to prove that I was the perfect fit for this job. One of my favorite Communications courses I took was Organizational Communications. This class taught me the importance of time management and how to keep a healthy lifestyle by balancing everything throughout your daily life and with going to school, working, and interning all at the same time, organizational communication was a key class for my success. I really enjoyed learning about how to organize my time and to not only make time for school work or internships but to also make time for myself with leisure activities and especially during the school week. Being a Communications major has been a wonderful experience and I can’t way to see what the future has in store!
